MR. MARTINO: Right now we're going to talk about something that I think you should be part of. Do you stretch your arms out as far as possible to read‚ are you having problems? Now‚ you may think okay‚ I need glasses‚ right, and everyone needs glasses eventually. You know‚ there's cutting edge technology and it's making it possible to correct that. You've had heard of LASIK‚ Dr. Jon Dishler is with us and he's our LASIK specialist‚ our eye specialist and he's on off and on this show and many people are having incredible result with his LASIK surgery‚ but there are other things and in fact because you are one of the pioneers and you're renowned‚ really‚ people know you and you're asked to do clinical trials from time to time. DR. DISHLER: Right. And we're involved in a clinical trial right now and it just got approached to start the trial by the FDA and I wanted to bring this to your viewer. MR. MARTINO: Because people still can be part of it free of charge. DR. DISHLER: Right. The first is step we're going to do is a 15 patients‚ we've already got nine lined up‚ so we need six more. We'll eel easily find those‚ but I want your people to know this. This is a real clinical trial‚ it doesn't cost people a penny to be in it‚ it doesn't cost them a penny to find out about it‚ not everyone qualifies‚ of course‚ and this is designed for people that have unlike all of our LASIK patients‚ great vision all their lives‚ now they're in their 40s or 50s, and they can't read. MR. MARTINO: It's that normal aging of the eyes. DR. DISHLER: Right. MR. MARTINO: We call it presbyopia. DR. DISHLER: Exactly‚ presbyopia. And what we have is a tiny lens that can be implanted in the surface of the eye‚ just under the surface‚ to restore reading vision. It's removable‚ if it doesn't work. MR. MARTINO: Oh. DR. DISHLER: So there's very little risk to this and we do this with LASIK now and we do people with monovision. MR. MARTINO: Right. DR. DISHLER: With LASIK and in fact people that want to have something that's really approved‚ we can do LASIK and do the same sort of thing but this is a removable lens and here's the news I want to bring today. MR. MARTINO: Okay. DR. DISHLER: We have now a contact lens that simulates what the results would be if you had this implant done. We just got approval to use this on a trial basis‚ very safe‚ just a contact lens that's a multi focal contact so people can come in if they're interested for free‚ have us put this contact in one eye‚ and let them try to see how they see for five days with that. MR. MARTINO: Now is it put in one eye or both when it comes to reading? DR. DISHLER: Well‚ for this‚ it's put in one eye‚ just like monovision. MR. MARTINO: But eventually would it be put in both? DR. DISHLER: Eventually it could be put in both‚ right. MR. MARTINO: Okay. Well‚ the idea is that you have normal‚ your normal distance vision. DR. DISHLER: Normal distance vision. MR. MARTINO: But this is a tiny lens that when you look close‚ it actually focuses through that new lens? DR. DISHLER: That's right. And it's so tiny‚ this is the trick of how it works‚ that. MR. MARTINO: Like the head of a pin? DR. DISHLER: Right‚ like the head of a pin. MR. MARTINO: Not the point. DR. DISHLER: The head of a pin is how big it is‚ right‚ so when you look far away in trials that have been done outside the U.S. the vision at distance is still very good in that eye‚ maybe very slightly blurry. MR. MARTINO: And here's how you may be a candidate. Okay‚ you have trouble reading a newspaper or a magazine. DR. DISHLER: Right. MR. MARTINO: You have difficulty with intermediate vision‚ you know that medium vision, and then you have good distance‚ but you know you need that help close up or you never had eye surgery before. So people with LASIK‚ because I was going to raise my hand and say please‚ please‚ please‚ but people with LASIK DR. DISHLER: Next study we're going to do is actually people that have had LASIK or have this with LASIK, this study is for people that have eyes that have never had surgery. MR. MARTINO: Right. DR. DISHLER: Don't have any problems with their eyes‚ just can't read‚ want something to read‚. MR. MARTINO: Here's how to qualify okay? In previous eye surgeries‚ post surgery eye check-ups for three years. You have to be available‚ folks. If you're going to get this free of charge‚ Dr. Dishler‚ and of course the people doing the study‚ they want to see the results. Because the FDA will be over looking this‚ looking over this‚ I mean. And then um‚ also‚ between the ages of 45 and 50 is that what it is. DR. DISHLER: Forty five and 60. MR. MARTINO: Okay. And then you want excellent distance vision but need reading glasses and healthy eyes of course and no dry eyes. And excellent health. And all they have to do is call you. We'll be giving you the number and of course from time to time you see it at the bottom of the screen. Right. MR. MARTINO: Now of course Dr. Jon Dishler is also available for LASIK and I got to tell you‚ we get such great feedback‚ Dr. Dishler‚ from people who come to see you. They're surprised that some doctors have told them they can't have LASIK. What's going on there? DR. DISHLER: We're seeing lots of patients that were told they can't have LASIK. Actually we've had‚ I can't mention when they are‚ some celebrities of our own. I mean‚ I know there's a celebrity on TV in our office recently‚ but a lot of people have been told they can't have LASIK‚ but now with this new technology we have‚ we can make ultra thin sub boman's flapped‚ we can do LASIK on people that never could have LASIK before‚ we can correct‚ and the biggest thing we bring up is for some reason so many people have been told that if they have astigmatism they can't have LASIK. We can fix almost any amount of astigmatism‚ we can do LASIK on people that previously were told they couldn't have LASIK‚ and we're just getting really nice results. So I encourage anyone that's thinking about this MR. MARTINO: Now‚ here's what I want to say. You have to‚ of course‚ consent to surgery‚ patients must first meet all of that criteria we laid out. If Dishler LASIK determines they're a good candidate‚ they will receive at no charge the surgery this implantable contact lens will be put in their eye to correct reading vision. DR. DISHLER: Why don't we hear from someone who actually had this done. DR. DISHLER: Great. MR. MARTINO: Do we have someone from your clinical trial? DR. DISHLER: I thought we had a tape. Do we have that here? MR. MARTINO: Okay‚ let's do that‚ let's do this. Yeah. FEMALE VOICE: May name is - - I worked in a financial institution‚ I have to be all day long in front of computers‚ telephones‚ magazines‚ reading‚ and before this procedure was really‚ really hard to take care of all the things that I have to do. I have to have glasses all over‚ reading glasses and used them for everything‚ even for watch whatever I was living on. So now I hear about the procedure‚ I went to the clinic‚ somebody took very good care of me‚ I decide to get the procedure‚ and after that my life's really changed .s now I don't use glasses‚ I don't buy glasses anymore‚ I can read the paper‚ I can watch my computer‚ I can see the GPS in the car‚ everything is totally different. FEMALE VOICE: It's a full size contact‚ got a tiny little MR. MARTINO: We were asking about this contact you can put in to simulate this.
