All-Laser LASIK - The Day of Surgery

The best way to feel confident about your laser vision correction procedure is to know what you can expect on the day of surgery. Though many patients feel nervous, understanding the procedure can help you prepare and be comfortable. At the Dishler Laser Institute, founded by Dr. Jon Dishler and specializing in all-laser LASIK surgery near Denver, Englewood, and Aurora, Colorado, we believe in preparing our patients before surgery in order to achieve the best possible results.

Prepping for LASIK Surgery

Before all-laser LASIK surgery, we always perform a final round of medical and vision tests, including a detailed corneal examination using our wavefront diagnostic system, to ensure that the procedure goes smoothly. We also administer mild sedatives if necessary to keep patients calm throughout treatment.
After answering any final questions, one of the registered nurses on our staff will insert temporary plugs into the tear ducts, which dissolve on their own a few days after surgery. Finally, patients are asked to wash their faces with antibacterial soap, don a surgical bonnet and booties. After receiving antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops, the patient is escorted to the surgical suite to begin LASIK surgery.

The All-Laser LASIK Process

Once the patient is comfortable under the laser array and the area around the eye has been sanitized, the eye is anesthetized and the patient is instructed to stare at a grouping of white lights for the first part of the procedure. Dr. Dishler gently inserts a device to hold the eye open, making it impossible to blink during the LASIK surgery.

There are two stages to the actual procedure. First, the corneal flap is created. In all-laser LASIK, the flap is created with a laser, allowing for the best possible hygiene and precision while minimizing the potential for LASIK risks. The flap is then lifted away to expose the inner cornea. It takes about 15 seconds to actually create each flap, with a total time of about 60 seconds per eye.

The second step in all-laser LASIK surgery is to reshape the cornea. In this process, the excimer laser gently reshapes the cornea, adjusting for flaws and irregularities in its structure in order to give the patient clearer, sharper vision. The entire process takes less than 15 minutes. After surgery, the patient will be able to return home and rest.
