All-Laser LASIK - Technology FAQ

At the Dishler Laser Institute, we use only the latest and most effective LASIK equipment available to ensure a positive outcome for each patient. Learn more about our state-of-the-art LASIK technology, used for every all-laser LASIK procedure, below. Serving Boulder, Littleton, Arvada, and all of Colorado and the surrounding area, our practice is dedicated to providing superior care at competitive rates without tricks or gimmicks.

What is all-laser LASIK?

Traditionally, the LASIK procedure has been performed using a mechanical blade known as a microkeratome to open a flap in the cornea. However, since 2001 Dr. Jon Dishler of the Dishler Laser Institute, treating patients from Boulder, Littleton, Arvada, and throughout Colorado, has been performing advanced all-laser LASIK. This technology is more precise and hygienic than any blade, reducing the risks associated with LASIK making better vision possible. All-laser LASIK is also an option for many patients whose corneas are too thin to be treated safely using the blade technique.

What is custom LASIK?

Custom LASIK is a technology for laser vision correction in which we use a three-dimensional wavefront imaging equipment to create a map of the cornea's surface, identifying minute irregularities that could cause distortions in the vision. This allows us to customize the cornea-reshaping process to the unique surface of each individual eye, correcting these subtle flaws to shape the eye for better vision.

With custom LASIK, the treatment process is as individualized as the patient's needs. As a result, patients are able to achieve clearer vision with fewer potential complications. Wavefront imaging is an option for patients undergoing all-laser LASIK, and also for those undergoing alternative procedures such as PRK.

Which equipment will be used for my procedure?

We maintain a variety of cutting-edge LASIK technology to give our patients multiple treatment options. In addition to the Orbscan® II wavefront imaging device, we maintain two all-laser LASIK workstations. The first combines the IntraLase® FS 60 flap creation laser with the ALLEGRETTO WAVE® Eye-Q excimer laser for cornea reshaping. This system enables quick, accurate, and hygienic treatment for fewer complications and a better result than previous systems.

Our newest laser system is a Zeiss workstation incorporating the VisuMax® FS laser for flap creation and the MEL 80™ excimer laser. In 2007, we became the first refractive surgery practice in the United States to offer treatment with this next-generation laser system. These lasers, developed by Carl Zeiss Meditech, are among the most advanced available, and have produced reliably outstanding results both in clinical trials and in our office.

Different equipment is ideal for different patients. Before surgery, Dr. Dishler evaluates each all-laser LASIK patient to determine which lasers to use during the procedure. In this way, we can treat as many patients as possible and ensure optimal surgical results.

What are the advantages of using newer LASIK technology?

As with any medical technology, LASIK technology has improved over time and continues to do so. Dr. Dishler has always believed in keeping pace with technological innovation in order to offer the safest, most effective treatment available. With advances such as all-laser LASIK, which Dr. Dishler offered in 2001 before almost any other refractive surgeon in the country, patients are able to benefit from dramatically better vision than was previously possible. Newer equipment also minimizes the risk of complications from surgery. We continue to maintain a state-of-the-art surgical facility because doing so is the right thing to do for our patients.
