IntraLase®: Blade-Free LASIK

IntraLaseThe first step of the LASIK procedure is to create a flap in the outer layer of the cornea. Traditionally, the flap has been created using a blade called a microkeratome, which shaves this outer layer away to expose the inner cornea for treatment with an excimer laser. At the Dishler Laser Institute, founded by Dr. Jon Dishler in the Denver area near Aurora and Englewood, Colorado, we specialize in blade-free LASIK with IntraLase®. Dr. Dishler introduced IntraLase® to our practice four years before any other surgeon in the area. This cutting-edge alternative to traditional LASIK minimizes flap-related complications and makes better surgical results possible.

Advantages of Blade-Free LASIK

Blade-Free LASIKIntraLase® blade-free LASIK offers many important advantages over conventional LASIK with a microkeratome blade. Many of the commonest LASIK complications are related to the flap creation process. No matter how sharp the blade may be, it cannot possibly make as precise an incision as that possible with the aid of a laser. For this reason defects in the flap are much less common with blade-free LASIK. Additionally, because the laser equipment never actually touches the eye, it minimizes the risk of infection that comes with any surgical procedure involving a blade, no matter how sanitary.

Because the IntraLase® procedure is more accurate in flap creation, it also makes better visual results possible. Blade-free LASIK makes an extremely thin flap possible, which heals more quickly. This also makes IntraLase® an option for some patients who may not be eligible for conventional LASIK due to thinner corneas.

About the IntraLase® FS 60

The IntraLase® FS 60 is a significant improvement on previous blade-free LASIK systems. During surgery, it creates the flap more quickly and efficiently, making the procedure gentler and more comfortable. The FS 60 laser is up to four times as fast as previous lasers, with unsurpassed computer-controlled precision for a perfect corneal flap in every procedure.

To make the flap, the laser applies brief pulses of energy to create a series of tiny bubbles under the corneal epithelium. Created over the course of about 15 seconds, these bubbles work together to lift the epithelium away from the eye, creating a perfectly shaped flap and exposing the corneal stroma for reshaping with the ALLEGRETTO WAVE® Eye-Q excimer laser.
