LASIK Recovery
A speedy and complication-free LASIK recovery with outstanding results depends on closely following the instructions of Dr. Dishler and attending all post-operative checkup appointments. Patients should also promptly report any problems or unexpected changes in vision.
Immediately after surgery, LASIK patients should rest and sleep as much as possible. It is crucial to avoid rubbing the eyes, as this can contribute to LASIK complications that could require corrective surgery. When sleeping during early LASIK recovery, patients must wear protective eyeshields. It is also a good idea to wear sunglasses during the day to further protect the eyes. We will provide a pair of sunglasses if necessary.
Good hygiene is extremely important during LASIK recovery. Before applying eye drops, recovering patients should wash their hands thoroughly. To prevent infections and other problems, it is essential to use all medicated eye drops as instructed by the doctor. It is also important to avoid pools and hot tubs, and to keep water, soap, shampoo, makeup, and other potential irritants out of the eyes.
Finally, patients should avoid activities that could strain the eyes. Physical exertion should be kept to a minimum during LASIK recovery to ensure optimum results, as should such activities as reading, watching television, and using a computer. Most patients are able to return to most normal activities within a few weeks of LASIK, though complete recovery and healing takes a few months. The recovery period is typically pain-free, and discomfort should be minimal.
LASIK Results
Most LASIK patients notice significant results immediately after surgery. The vision should improve further over the next few days. Some fluctuation is normal during the recovery period, but within two weeks the vision should begin to stabilize. Some patients experience temporary problems with night vision, but these typically clear up within four weeks of the procedure.
Within a month or two, most patients begin to see their final LASIK results. Because we take advantage of the latest LASIK technology to perform all-laser LASIK, many of our patients report that they no longer require corrective lenses for their normal daily activities. Most of our patients achieve 20/20 vision or better. Some patients still need corrective lenses for reading, night driving, and other specialized activities.
