PRK – Other Procedures

In addition to LASIK, our practice offers a variety of other refractive surgery options designed to improve vision problems caused by refractive errors. These offerings allow us to serve patients who are not good candidates for the LASIK procedure. Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), implantable contact lenses (ICL), and other options at our practice serving Aurora, Englewood, Denver, and other Colorado communities allow us to improve the vision of almost any patient.

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy)

PRK is an alternative to LASIK that avoids some of the risks associates with the corneal flap required for the LASIK procedure. For individuals with corneal scarring, thin corneas, and other corneal conditions, PRK is the best treatment option. It is also safer for pilots and others whose professions or lifestyles make LASIK a poor option.

Before surgery, PRK patients undergo similar testing to the pre-operative tests for LASIK patients. Rather than creating a corneal flap, Dr. Jon Dishler uses a laser to gently remove a portion of the corneal epithelium in order to expose the deeper corneal tissue beneath it. The cornea is then reshaped with a laser just as it is in LASIK. After surgery, patients are fitted with protective contact lenses to prevent damage to the eyes while the corneal epithelium grows back.

Dr. Dishler achieves results with PRK comparable to those he achieves with LASIK. The same advanced technology is used to plan the procedure, including three-dimensional wavefront imaging. The principle difference between PRK and LASIK for our Denver, Englewood, and Aurora, Colorado area patients is that PRK recovery takes longer than LASIK recovery because the corneal epithelium must re-grow.
